Douglas Leigh, who designed some of the spectacular billboards in Times Square, suggested ways the owners of the Empire State Building might make extra money. He proposed turning the top of the building into a giant Coke bottle or a cigarette. He was turned down. He had to settle for designing the lighting systems that today make the building into a nighttime landmark.
